This is the treatment of cancer by using surgery. This forms one of the pillars of traditional cancer treatment. The others are chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy. The veterinarian you will meet is a specialist surgeon and will discuss your pet’s treatment in this context. It is very important that this part of your pet’s treatment is not done in isolation and extensive discussions with other specialities will be done if the disease you pet warrants it. This can be overwhelming, and we will make sure to discuss all aspects of your pet’s diagnosis and treatment plan with you.
Oncology is the area of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. More than half of dogs older than 10 years old will develop cancer. Our pet population is getting older as health care improves. Unfortunately, this means most pet owners will be facing a diagnosis of cancer during their pet’s lifetime. We use many of the same concepts and techniques to make a diagnosis, determine the extent of disease, and ultimately make very similar treatment decisions as they do in people. With one important difference! You are your pet’s medical advocate. Often your dog or cat will not feel sick at all, and this can make some of these difficult decisions even more challenging. Our role this process is firstly to be an advisor by providing as much information as you need to make an informed decision. We will discuss things like response to treatment, expectations of cure or relapse, and importantly how your dog and cat will cope with treatment. Our focus always will be aiming for a cure while maintaining quality of life. Our second job will then be to execute the plan that you decide on. Thirdly we will discuss and be transparent about the expected costs involved.
