The Wemmeshoek Diagnostic Laboratory (WDL) is a veterinary registered and accredited diagnostic laboratory that specialises in animal diagnostics, including small and large companion animals, exotic animals, production animals, and aquaculture animals. Being able to run blood tests round the clock is crucial for our veterinarians to closely monitor patients and for our team of professionals to be able to make accurate diagnoses.

Our small animal theatres are designed to meet the highest standards of veterinary surgery. Featuring fully equipped sterile operating suites, advanced ventilation and lighting systems, and cutting-edge surgical technology, our facility ensures optimal conditions for all types of surgical cases. Designed for efficiency and excellence, our theatre facility supports a wide range of small animal surgical interventions in a controlled, sterile environment.

At Vetscape our high-speed equine treadmill diagnostic service is designed for our veterinarians to safely assess your horse in order to identify any underlying health issues affecting their performance abilities. Our surgical team will frequently perform high-speed equine endoscopies which enables advanced diagnostic evaluation of your horse’s upper airway during exercise. Using a dynamic endoscopy, we are able to replicate natural performance conditions and fully assess your horse’s respiratory functioning at a high speed in real-time. This technique aids in the accurate diagnosis of conditions such as dynamic airway collapse, laryngeal dysfunction and other exercise-induced respiratory issues. Additionally, our team is equipped to perform dynamic ECGs (electrocardiogram) allowing your horse’s heart functioning to be fully assessed during exercise. This technology is essential for diagnosing arrhythmias, monitoring cardiac health, and evaluating fitness levels in both sport and leisure horses. With expert interpretation and tailored treatment plans, our dynamic ECG service supports optimal cardiovascular health and peak athletic performance of your horse.

Our equine team prioritises our patients’ health and safety with our controlled and secure Equine Vector Protected Facility. This specialised facility is designed in such a way that we can accept patients from both the AHS protection zone and the infected zone without putting other horses in the surveillance zone at risk. Access into the facility is very limited and highly controlled and all of our team members with access to the barn have received full training. We have 2 stables fully equipped for patients needing more intensive care and an additional 4 stables for horses that require general care. The facility is equipped with everything needed to assess and evaluate patients safely.

Vetscape’s Isolation Facility is an important area that is designed to provide a high level of biosecurity and treat horses with infectious conditions while ensuring a safe and healthy environment is maintained for all equine patients in our hospital. Each of our 4 isolation stables are equipped with both mare and foal facilities to limit patient stress while ensuring our veterinary team is able to provide round the clock critical care to both moms and babies during their hospital stay. Stables are spacious, well-ventilated and have separate access points for strict hygiene protocols to be followed at all times to prevent the risk of any cross contamination between patients.

Our equine theatre complex is growing! Currently, we are equipped with two equine surgical suites, one being used primarily for aseptic orthopedic and soft tissue procedures and the other, used for contaminated surgical procedures such as colic operations and urachal ablations. Soon we will be opening our standing surgical theatre which will be our specialised surgical facility used for any procedures that can be performed standing under sedation rather than under general anesthesia.
